The chairs in this category are considered shield back dining room chairs. Shield back dining room chairs, which also are considered Hepplewhite dining room chairs after English furniture maker George Hepplewhite, have a mahogany back in the shape of a shield, but not all shield back dining chairs utilize this overly distinctive shape. Some mahogany shield back chairs can have an oval back or, like our Harrisburg chair, they can have an entirely different and distinctive shape all together. Chairs with soft lines, round back designs, with shorter more curved chair arms, straight legs, without excessive carving are often considered Hepplewhite shield back dining room chairs.
